Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 8

Akan ku tunggu
Takdir menentukan
Engkau dan aku
Kan bersua lagi
Will I wait
Destiny to determine
You and me
Will meet again

Referral Post click here

'akan' means 'will' as in future tense. 'ku' is a short form of 'aku' which means 'I'; and 'tunggu' means 'wait'. Putting them together we get 'will I wait'. This is a bit misleading as in English this sounds like a question. We should reorder the words: I will wait. This is what the sentence means.

'takdir' means 'fate' or 'destiny'; 'menentukan' is a verb meaning 'to determine'.

'engkau dan aku' is pretty straight forward, it means 'you and me'.

'kan' in the last verse, is a short form of 'akan'. 'bersua' means 'to meet'; and 'lagi' means 'more', but in this context it means 'again'.

So, we get: I will wait (for) fate to determine (that) you and me will meet again.

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 7

Tinggallah aku
Menyulam cinta yang sirna
Di dalam senyum
Yang berbayang duka
Ku kesepian
Leaving me to
Embroider the lost love
In a smile
With a shadow of sadness
I (am) lonely

Referral Post click here

'tinggal' means 'to leave', 'aku' means 'I', 'menyulam' means 'to embroider', and 'sirna' is an adjective that means 'destroyed, disappeared, gone'.

so 'tinggallah aku menyulam cinta yang sirna' would mean 'leaving me to embroider the love that's lost/gone'.

'di' means 'at', 'dalam' means 'inside', and 'senyum' means 'smile'. So 'di dalam senyum' would
mean 'at inside a smile'. 'at inside' here is best translated as 'in', giving us 'in a smile'.

'yang' means 'that', 'bayang' means 'shadow', 'berbayang' means 'has a shadow', while 'duka' means 'sadness'.

'yang berbayang duka' would mean 'that which has a shadow of sadness'.

'ku' is a more polite form of 'aku' which means 'I'. 'kesepian' is from the root word 'sepi' with the circumfix 'ke...an' applied to it. It means 'loneliness'.

'ku kesepian' would mean 'I am lonely'. Note that the Malay language does not need the copula 'is' to form a sentence.

So 'Tinggallah aku menyulam cinta yang sirna di dalam senyum yang berbayang duka. Ku kesepian' would mean 'Leaving me to embroider the love that's gone, in a smile that has the shadow of sadness. I am lonely'.

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 6

Tiada lagi
Irama cintamu sayang
Tiada lagi
Haruman kasihmu intan
(There is) no more
Rhythm of your love, (my) love
(There is) no more
Scent of your love, precious

Referral Post click here

'tiada' is actually a contraction of 'tidak ada' which means '(does) not exist'. 'lagi' means 'more'. 'irama' means 'rhythm'. 'cintamu' is made up of two words: 'cinta' means 'love', 'mu' means 'your'.

So 'tiada lagi irama cintamu, sayang' means 'not exist more rhythm love-yours, my love'. Ok. That might not make much sense. With a few adjustments, it really means '(does) not exist (any)more the rhythm (of) your love, my love'.

'haruman' means 'scent'. 'kasihmu' is made up of two words: 'kasih' which is a synonym of 'love', and 'mu' which means 'your'. 'intan' is a kind of 'precious stone', in this case it would mean 'precious' or 'my precious'.

So 'tiada lagi haruman kasihmu, intan' would mean 'there no longer exists the scent of your love, my precious'.

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 5

Engkau yang kudamba
Hilang tiba-tiba
You that I desire
Disappeared suddenly

Referral Post click here

'engkau yang' means 'you that..'. 'kudamba' is made up of two words: 'ku' which means 'I', and 'damba' which means 'desire'. So 'engkau yang kudamba' would mean 'you that I desire'.

'hilang' means 'lost', but in this context it means 'disappear'. 'tiba' on it's own means 'arrive', but 'tiba-tiba' would mean 'suddenly'. It would be good to know the relation between 'tiba' and 'tiba-tiba', and how a simple doubling of the word creates a totally different meaning. I wish I knew.

So if we put all the pieces of the puzzle together, 'engkau yang kudamba hilang tiba-tiba' would mean 'you that I desire disappeared suddenly'.

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 4

Belum sempat aku
Memberi padamu
Before am able I
To give to you

Referral Post click here

'belum' means 'not yet'. As for 'aku', it is a pronoun which means 'I'.

'sempat' is a bit difficult to translate. The closest I can come up with is that it means 'able'. Example, if someone asked you if you ate breakfast before coming to work, you could say "Tidak sempat", which would mean 'you weren't able to' or more accurately 'you weren't able to due to insufficient time'.

So 'belum sempat aku' would mean 'not yet able (in time) I'. I probably should reorder the words, but I'll do that later.

'memberi' means 'give', whereas 'padamu' is made up of two words 'pada' which means 'to' and 'mu' which means 'you'.

So 'belum sempat aku memberi padamu' would mean 'not yet able (in time) I give to you'. Or more accurately it would mean 'before I am able to give (it) to you...'.

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 3

Cinta yang murni
Sehangat mentari
Membara hanyalah
Untukmu
A love that's pure
As hot as the sun
Smoldering only
For you

Referral Post click here

"cinta" means "love". "yang" means "that". "murni" means "pure". So "Cinta yang murni" means "Love that pure". Well, that's not entirely correct, we have to plug an "is" in there, somewhere. "Love that (is) pure". Yup. That's better.

"hangat" means "hot". "sehangat" means "as hot as". "mentari" means "sun", though, in prose "matahari" is the word usually used to denote "sun".

"membara" is a verb meaning "smoldering". "hanya" means "only", whereas "lah" is an emphasis. "untuk" means "for". "mu" is another way of saying "awak" which is politer (I've never used the word "mu" in conversation, ever). So in essence the lyric is trying to say "Cintaku membara hanyalah untukmu" meaning "My love smolders only for you".

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 2

Menanti hadirnya
Kasihmu sayang
Waiting (for) the presence
(Of) your love, (my) love

"Menanti" means "waiting". "hadirnya" means "the presence of". "kasihmu" is made up of two words: "kasih" and "mu". "kasih" is a noun that means "love". And "mu" is a polite form of saying "you" (singular).

"sayang" is a term of endearment, it is a noun which means "my love". The usage of this word is not limited to only couples. We can also refer to our kids as "sayang", which in this case would mean "dear".

Relating to the previous verses, it is probably trying to say "Hatiku menanti hadirnya kasihmu, sayang" meaning "My heart is waiting (for) the presence of your love, my love".

Intanku Kesepian - Explanation Part 1

Hanya padamu
Terbuka hatiku
Only to you
(Is) open my heart

Referral Post click here

"hanya" means "only". "padamu" is made up of two words: "pada" and "mu". "pada" means "to", while "mu" is a polite way of saying "awak" or "engkau"--both meaning "you" (singular). So "hanya padamu" means "only to you".

"hatiku" is also made up of two words: "hati" and "ku". "hati", in this case, would mean "heart"; in a science book, it would mean "liver". "ku" is a polite way of saying "aku". So "hatiku" would literally mean "heart my" or more accurately "my heart".

"terbuka" is made up of the prefix "ter" and the word "buka" which means "open". Hence, "terbuka" would mean "is open". So "terbuka hatiku" would literally mean "is open my heart".

"Hanya padamu terbuka hatiku" is a poetical way of saying "Hatiku terbuka hanya padamu", meaning "My heart is open only to you".

Photo credit to EnlighthenNext MagazineNotes:(1) Difference between the prefix "ter" and "mem": In the sentence, "John telah membuka the door", "telah membuka" would mean "opened" (transitive). In the sentence, "The door terbuka", "terbuka" would mean "is opened" (intransitive).(2) The word "ku" is almost never used in conversation. Usually, "aku" which means "I" will be used among friends. And the politer form "saya" will be used with someone you've just met or someone elder.(3) The word "mu" is also almost never used in conversation. Usually, "engkau" is used among friends. And the politer form "awak" will be used with someone you've just met or someone elder.

Wings - Intanku Kesepian

For our first posting, we have selected a song by the Malaysian Rock Group "Wings" entitled "Intanku Kesepian". The translations given below are literal, hence, some parts of it would not make much sense--in fact, it would make much nonsense! ;P We will provide the explanation to these lyrics in the next post.

Intanku Kesepian

Hanya padamu
Terbuka hatiku
Menanti hadirnya
Kasihmu sayang

Cinta yang murni
Sehangat mentari
Membara hanyalah
Untukmu

Belum sempat aku
Memberi padamu
Engkau yang kudamba
Hilang tiba-tiba

Tiada lagi
Irama cintamu sayang
Tiada lagi
Haruman kasihmu intan

Tinggallah aku
Menyulam cinta yang sirna
Di dalam senyum
Yang berbayang duka
Ku kesepian

Akan ku tunggu
Takdir menentukan
Engkau dan aku
Kan bersua lagi

Memadu cinta
Selembut bayu senja

Mengukir rindu
Di daunan hari kasih

Menghilang resah
Lewat pertemuan kita
Biarpun harus
Ku telan keperitan

Kerana engkau
Intan yang ku sayang
Akan ku terus
Menunggumu Intan
My Precious (is) Lonely

Only to you
(Is) open my heart
Waiting (for) the presence
(Of) your love, (my) love

A love that's pure
As hot as the sun
Smoldering only
For you

Before am able I
To give to you
You that I desire
Disappeared suddenly

(There is) no more
Rhythm of your love, (my) love
(There is) no more
Scent of your love, precious

Leaving me to
Embroider the lost love
In a smile
With a shadow of sadness
I (am) lonely

Will I wait
Destiny to determine
You and me
Will meet again

Be in love
As soft as the evening breeze

Carving the longing
On the leaves of the days of love

Disappears restlessness
After our encounter
Eventhough have to
I swallow the pain

Because you
(Are) the precious that I love
Will I continue
Waiting for you, precious
